I was wondering what your impression of ENTJ’s is? I’m really tired of seeing us portrayed as detached, opportunistic workaholics.

Ok, well.

Detached – I disagree nearly completely.  I think the only ENTJ I’ve known I would call detached was my high school physics teacher, and I think it was his way of expressing humour, and mostly kept up for his own sanity.  I think he was pretty invested in his own way.  Most ENTJs are extremely passionate people, about any number of things, and they are really good about sharing their excitement for things to any number of people.  They are also really great at supporting and promoting the work of other passionate people.  Really awesome teachers and friends.

Opportunistic – uhhh.  I haven’t especially noticed.  I guess sometimes ENTJs don’t always notice or care about hurt feelings when they’re getting things done, but to be honest there’s a reason why I keep mixing up ENFPs and ENTJs, and that is that a lot of ENTJs tend to have really well developed Fi.

Workaholics – okay, this one I kind of agree with, but, like, I’m a slacker compared to most people, so if I had to do all the things an ENTJ did in a week, I’d probably have a breakdown.  I think in the sense that Te is a problem-solving function, you are constantly seeing things that need to be fixed, and then fixing them – it’s your primary mode of interacting with the world.

Cumberbatch as an INTP? Though I think many of his characters are, I doubt that he himself is. His body language in interviews seems to indicate Se and Fi more than dominant Ti and Ne, and I don’t see much evidence of inferior Fe; on the contrary he seems confident in social situations. I’m interested in your reasoning here. Great blog, though, very interesting categorization style and I do agree on most of your typings.

See thoughts below, re: typing characters.  I don’t actually find him significantly different from his characters, as far as MBTI goes.  Mostly he just reminds me of the other INTPs in the tag…

Ron Swanson mbti?

I know there are a lot of blogs that type characters out there.  This is not one.

Here’s why:

I’m typing primarily by external physical things, so a character to me is a combination of actor’s body language and voice patterns, a script writer’s dialogue and the costume designer’s wardrobe choices paired with hair and make-up.

Usually, the character is not that dissimilar from the actor – if I see them in interview, their MBTI doesn’t seem significantly different, even if the actor and character are obviously different.

There are very few people I’ve found that play completely different types and even fewer who do so convincingly – most actors kind of push at the boundaries of their own type.  Casting directors seem to be pretty good at finding people who are convincing at their roles – ie, the same MBTI type.

Some examples of actors playing out of type would be Mandy Pantinkin (either an ENFP or ESFP) playing Jason Gideon, an INFJ on Criminal Minds,  Mary McDonnell (ISFP, I think?) playing Laura Roslin (ENTJ) on Battlestar Galactica, Katie Sackhoff (ENFP) playing Kara Thrace (STPish) on Battlestar, again.  Jared Padalecki (ESFP) playing Sam Winchester (ENTJ?) on Supernatural.  Claudia Black (ENFJ) as Aeryn Sun (ISTJish) on Farscape, or as Vala (ESFP) on Stargate SG-1.

There are more, but they’re not coming to me right now.  Usually it’s SFPs and ENFPs, who can mimic the body language well enough and let the script, etc., cover the rest of the character.  ISFPs tend to be cast as INs a fair bit, presumably because it’s harder to find actors of that type.  All the examples I gave are all of people I watched ages ago and were kind of surprised by in interviews. I haven’t been all that surprised in a while – usually at this point I can just tell they’re playing off type.

There’s also a weird thing that ISTPs (maybe also INTPs?) do – I’m thinking Johnny Depp, mostly – where they’re playing a concept not a…person I guess, and I’m not sure how well that translates to an MBTI type.  I remember Johnny saying about Sleepy Hollow that he was playing Ichabod Crane as a girl-detective, like Nancy Drew.

So to answer your question, I have typed Nick Offerman as an ISTP and I can’t unsee the ISTP.

I can see where you’re coming from with your thoughts on kanye being neurodivergent but im almost wondering if he’s infp or infj.

I think Matthew Bellamy is the only one currently in the type divergent tag.  Unfortunately, if you were searching for “type divergent”, everyone who was previously tagged or mentioned will also come up.  I guess tumblr posts keep a memory?

Kanye’s an ESTP.  The type divergent tag was from when I was typing more with eye contact and wasn’t especially used to STPs.  ISTPs can sometimes use a lot.  ESTPs can sometimes use very little.  Going by only eye contact alone, it can look like they’re not just one type.

As far as INFP/J, we are really bad at self-promotion, which is like the opposite of a problem for Kanye.  He’s probably got some well developed 3rd and 4th functions that make him look IN-ish.

Seeing that you usually type people by comparing them to other people of a certain type, do you often wonder if you even typed those people right in the first place? I kind of do the same and it’s difficult not to get caught in a loop. Do you have like a few people in each type that are rock solid, and you never doubt their typing, and they can help you get back on track? Would you mind sharing a few? Thanks a lot!

I get many people wrong by group, often, so yes, all the time.  The only tag that I guarantee is completely 100% right at the moment is the INFJs.

I don’t really find that having one rock solid person helps, because there’s so much variation within a type – usually the people I’m unclear on are different enough from the people I’m sure about that I’m mostly going on Te by the time I post them (ie. are they an E or an I, an F or a T, etc.).  What does help is finding enough people of one variation that it becomes clear that they are all definitely one type and not another.  Also lots of review and watching a pile of video in a row by tag, which makes it easier for Fi to get a sense of the type as a whole and pick out which characteristics are type-related and which aren’t.

So… quantity is key, pretty much.

In terms of people I’m rock solid on… I’ve already kind of refused to do this once – I’m not very comfortable pointing to people as the ‘most’ their type.  Also who knows, I’m probably wrong about some of them.

I guess I’ll keep it personal: I just typed the INFP most like me, and that is Benjamin Hochman if he were neither male nor Israeli and were somewhat more introverted.  enfjpuppettheatre is like if Miss Irenie Rose grew up to be Sasha Cohen, and infj-zen is most like Jessica Stern.  I think I mentioned on her post that JK Rowling is pretty much my mother.

Out of all of these, I think maybe having infj-zen and Jessica Stern as examples helped to fix up the INFJ tag when I got tempted to fill it with other types – the INFJ tag is probably the least celebrity filled tag, though.  The rest of us are not especially like a lot of the rest of the people in our tags – or not enough for me to pick up on instantly with Si and map onto other people.

is it common for esfps to stank? Cos srsly my Lil sister…. Lord forgive me but… shes a musty ass bitch like REALLY she musty its ridiculous and dont get me wrong of course i would never say that 2 her face but lawd… Anyways so is it common?

Uhhhhhhhhh.

If you’re asking if one type has poorer hygiene than the rest, I don’t think that’s necessarily a type thing…

Maybe how they think/act about their poor hygiene is more likely to be typeable?
